Grabbing the fabric loops about 1-1/2 feet into the fabric and letting the excess hang down provides a secure grip without crowding the end of the fabric. This distance gives you enough bite on the loops to prevent slipping under tension, while the tail of fabric left hanging makes it easier to control and adjust the stretch as you attach the stretcher. If you grab too far in, you’ll create excess bulk that’s hard to manage and can impede smooth tensioning. If you grab very close to the end or only a short distance, the loops can slip or the fabric can tear under load. Keeping about 1-1/2 feet of fabric gripped with the excess hanging down balances security and maneuverability.
